Feeding insects to livestock has been a highly contentious topic, but the practice of including insects like black soldier fly (BSF), housefly and mealworms in animal feed is becoming more common.
According to a recent Feed International article, there are many benefits to animal feed enriched with insects – insects are an easily sustainable source or protein, they are highly digestible, they contain high levels of essential amino acids, and they are preferable to plant-based proteins for younger animals.
According to the article:
“In the United States, the use of insect meal is decided on a state-by-state basis, as it is a grey area within U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation.”
