10/10/2024Introducing The Repete Pet of the Month for October: Crys 🐴
Meet Crys, a 34-year-old American Quarter horse who has been a loyal companion and teacher to many over the years. Crys belongs to one of our Repete teammates and is the oldest horse he’s ever cared for. In his prime, Crys had the classic build of his breed—shorter and more muscular than his racetrack cousins, perfectly suited for ranch work and roping cattle. He even won team penning events and served as a pickup horse in rodeos. His full registered name, Crystal Clear Lazy John Henry, reflects his distinguished pedigree.
Crys wasn’t just any ranch horse—he was a dependable partner. When doctoring sick calves, he was trained to keep the rope taut until given the cue to release slack, allowing his owner to work solo without needing an extra hand.
But Crys isn’t all business—he’s what cowboys call “kid broke,” meaning he’s gentle and trustworthy around children and inexperienced riders. A whole generation of grandkids (and many of their friends) had their first equestrian experience with Crys. With his calm nature, he’s always been a patient teacher.
Now at 34, Crys spends his days giving rides to little kids, still offering those magical first-time experiences. In his later years, he’s developed a funny habit—when he’s had enough attention, he shakes like a wet dog! His owner can always see it coming because Crys gives a big sigh beforehand, allowing him to make sure the kid stays seated safely.
Fun fact: Crys has been fed Repete-mixed feed for much of his life when he wasn’t out on pasture. He also has a few favorite treats, including horse treats made in a Repete customer’s plant, and watermelon rinds. Despite his impressive age of 99 in human years, he’s still full of spirit and energy.
Join us in celebrating Crys, our October Pet of the Month!
